Teaching Assistant | Merton

Ortus Recruitment is excited to partner with a highly regarded mainstream primary school in Merton, seeking a passionate and dedicated Teaching Assistant for a full-time, long-term role. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with experience working with children, who is ready to start immediately and make a positive impact on young learners.

Role Overview: As a Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the class teacher and ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the classroom. Your primary focus will be assisting Key Stage 1 (KS1) students, helping to manage classroom behaviour, contributing to lesson planning, and creating a safe and engaging learning environment. You’ll also be responsible for monitoring, recording, and reporting student progress, ensuring their individual needs—physical, emotional, and social—are met both inside and outside the classroom.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the class teacher in delivering engaging lessons and managing student behaviour.
  • Assist with lesson planning and preparation.
  • Monitor and record students’ progress, providing regular feedback.
  • Supervise children during breaks and lunchtimes, ensuring their well-being.
  • Foster positive relationships with pupils, encouraging their social and emotional development.

Essential Skills and Attributes:

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Creative approach to learning activities that engage and motivate students.
  • Excellent organisational abilities to maintain a tidy and safe classroom environment.
  • Empathy and understanding when building relationships with children.
  • Active listening to respond to students’ needs effectively.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to respond to daily classroom dynamics.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with children.
  • A fully enhanced DBS check on the update service (or willingness to complete one through Ortus Recruitment).
