Student Engagement Assistant

Location: Upper Sydenham
Pay: £89 – £105 per day (PAYE)
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday (8:30am – 4:00pm)
Start Date: January 2026

Ortus Recruitment is working alongside a friendly and inclusive primary school in Upper Sydenham to recruit a Student Engagement Assistant. This role offers an excellent opportunity to make a positive impact, particularly when supporting pupils with additional learning needs.


Role Overview

As a Student Engagement Assistant, you will support pupils and teachers throughout the school day, helping to create a positive and engaging learning environment. Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing one-to-one and small group support, particularly for pupils with SEND, adapting support to meet individual needs.
  • Working closely with class teachers to promote inclusive and engaging lessons.
  • Assisting with classroom preparation, learning resources and basic administrative tasks.
  • Building strong, trusting relationships with pupils to support confidence, emotional wellbeing and engagement.
  • Supporting the planning and delivery of activities that promote social, emotional and academic development.

This position is well suited to individuals looking to develop a career in education or SEND support while gaining valuable classroom experience.


Candidate Requirements

  • Previous experience working with children, ideally within a classroom or SEN setting.
  • A patient, empathetic and positive approach with strong communication skills.
  • The ability to adapt to changing situations and respond calmly to challenging behaviours.
  • A genuine commitment to supporting children of all abilities.
  • Confidence working collaboratively with staff, pupils and families.
