Ortus Recruitment is working in partnership with a welcoming and inclusive mainstream primary school in Vauxhall to appoint a dedicated 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant for an immediate start. This is a rewarding full-time position supporting a pupil with special educational needs, providing consistent, nurturing, and structured support throughout the school day.

The Role

As a 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and wider school staff to support the child’s academic progress, emotional wellbeing, and social development. You will play a vital role in helping the pupil access learning, develop independence, and feel fully included within the classroom and school community.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide consistent 1:1 support to a named pupil throughout the school day
• Support the child’s individual learning, communication, and emotional needs
• Assist with access to the curriculum, adapting activities where appropriate
• Promote positive behaviour, confidence, and engagement in learning
• Encourage independence and participation in both learning and play
• Support the pupil during transitions, playtimes, and daily routines
• Work collaboratively with the class teacher, SENCO, and external professionals
• Observe, record, and feedback on progress, challenges, and achievements
• Uphold safeguarding, confidentiality, and all school policies at all times

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

• Experience supporting children with special educational needs (SEN)
• A calm, patient, and empathetic approach
• Strong observation skills and attention to detail
• Reliability, consistency, and a nurturing presence
• The ability to follow guidance while using initiative when required
• Good communication skills and a positive, team-focused attitude

Desirable (But Not Essential)…

• Relevant qualifications (e.g. Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant, SEN training, or equivalent)
• Experience working in a mainstream primary school setting
• An understanding of differentiated learning and inclusive practices
