Ortus Recruitment is proud to be working in partnership with a welcoming and inclusive mainstream primary school in West Norwood to appoint a compassionate and dedicated Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 support for a child in Early Years with emerging additional needs. This is a full-time, long-term opportunity for someone who is patient, nurturing, and passionate about supporting children with social communication differences, language delay, and sensory processing needs.
About the Role
You will provide consistent, child-centred 1:1 support to help the child feel safe, understood, and able to access learning. Working closely with the class teacher, SENCo, and external professionals, you will play a vital role in supporting communication, emotional regulation, and early development through play-based and sensory-informed approaches.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide calm, consistent 1:1 support throughout the school day
- Support communication development using strategies from the class team and Speech & Language professionals
- Implement a tailored Occupational Therapy programme to support sensory and emotional regulation
- Help the child access learning through play-based, practical, and sensory-led approaches
- Use visual supports, structured routines, and sensory strategies to aid transitions and regulation
- Take a reflective and curious approach to behaviour, identifying and removing barriers to learning
- Support the child during swimming sessions (including poolside assistance)
- Encourage independence, confidence, and positive peer interactions
- Facilitate outdoor learning and movement opportunities
- Respond warmly to the child’s affectionate nature while maintaining professional boundaries
- Work collaboratively with the class teacher and SENCo to monitor progress and share observations
- Contribute positively within a team of Early Years professionals
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- Experience supporting children in Early Years or Key Stage 1
- An understanding of additional needs such as social communication differences and sensory processing needs
- A nurturing, patient, and adaptable approach
- The ability to follow agreed strategies consistently
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
- A genuine passion for inclusive education
