Ortus Recruitment are proud to partner with a vibrant, large-scale primary school in Streatham to recruit a dedicated Room Lead for their specialist Primary SEN Provision. This provision sits at the heart of the school’s inclusive approach, offering a highly structured, bespoke learning environment for pupils with complex additional needs. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced SEN practitioner who is ready to step into a leadership-focused role, overseeing the day-to-day operation of a specialist classroom while supporting pupils to achieve meaningful “small steps” of progress.

The Role

As Room Lead, you will take operational responsibility for one of the specialist rooms within the Provision. You will lead a small team of Teaching Assistants while ensuring that pupils receive consistent, high-quality support in a calm and structured environment.

You will play a key role in adapting the primary curriculum to meet a wide range of needs and supporting pupils as they transition between the Provision and their mainstream classes.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership
• Supervise and deploy a team of up to three SEN Teaching Assistants
• Provide guidance and mentorship to ensure consistent, high-quality support across the room

Primary Curriculum Adaptation
• Work closely with the Inclusion Manager to translate the EYFS/KS1/KS2 curriculum into sensory, accessible, and engaging activities
• Support pupils through personalised and structured learning approaches

Behaviour & Regulation
• Act as the lead practitioner for behaviour support and de-escalation strategies
• Implement approaches such as Positive Handling and Zones of Regulation to maintain a calm and safe learning environment

Transition Management
• Coordinate opportunities for pupils to move between the Provision and their mainstream classes
• Support pupils to build confidence and independence in wider school settings

The Ideal Candidate

• Significant experience supporting pupils within a Primary SEN setting (e.g. ASD, SLCN, Global Developmental Delay)
• A confident practitioner with the ability to lead and mentor other Teaching Assistants
• Strong organisational skills to manage the logistics of a busy specialist classroom
• Experience with Makaton, PECS, or Colourful Semantics is highly desirable
• A genuine passion for supporting pupils with additional needs and celebrating every step of progress
