A school in the Richmond borough are looking for an experienced teaching assistant, who is passionate about supporting children with autism and building a strong relationship with them. The school has a supportive leadership team, who are prepared for the challenges thrown at them throughout the day. If you apply for this role and are successful, you will receive professional training on how to deal with children with autism, which will help you when supporting them.

This partner school are looking for someone to support a pupil, with autism on a day to day basis in the year 4 class. The pupil is extremely bright with a great attention to detail, however he has difficulty with interacting with others, which could knock down his self – esteem. Furthermore he struggles to stay focused when learning, because he gets distracted easily. Your role will involve supporting emotionally and socially, as well as his academics in the classroom.

Your role:

  • Look after children’s social, physical and emotional welfare.
  • Listen to the children’s needs and respond accordingly, so they feel heard.
  • Find different ways to make learning interesting so they don’t get bored or distracted.
  • Support them when they are interacting with other pupils, which will help them build there self-confidence up.
  • Keep reports on how the children are improving and what they need to work on.

Skills needed for this role:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to be patient and sensitive to the children’s needs
  • Being able to be flexible and open to change
  • Ability to understand peoples reaction, and being prepared to respond to them in the correct manner.
  • Creativity, to make lessons interesting for the children to engage in.
