SEMH Teaching Assistant

Ortus Recruitment is working in partnership with a well-regarded mainstream primary school in Stockwell, London, to recruit a dedicated SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant. This full-time/part-time position offers the opportunity to work closely with children facing SEMH challenges, ensuring they receive the tailored support and guidance they need to engage effectively in their learning and develop vital life skills.

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students experiencing social, emotional, and mental health difficulties. Your role will focus on fostering a safe, supportive environment, assisting in the implementation of targeted interventions, and helping students build positive relationships with their peers and educators.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one and group support for students with SEMH needs, ensuring they receive personalised, focused assistance.
  • Assist the class teacher in designing and implementing tailored strategies to address students’ SEMH challenges.
  • Foster a calm, inclusive, and nurturing classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Track and monitor student progress, providing feedback and positive reinforcement to both students and the teaching team.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, parents, and external professionals to ensure comprehensive support for each student.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Proven experience working with children with SEMH needs or in similar educational roles.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal skills, and a compassionate approach.
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with students and colleagues.
  • Relevant qualifications (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent).
  • Patience, resilience, and a proactive attitude toward supporting students in their development.
