SEMH Teaching Assistant

Ortus Recruitment is working in partnership with a vibrant and inclusive primary school in the London Borough of Lambeth to appoint a committed and enthusiastic SEMH Teaching Assistant. This is a full-time position, available for an immediate start, offering an excellent opportunity for someone experienced in supporting pupils with additional emotional and behavioural needs.

About the Role:

In this role, you will work closely with a pupil requiring additional support due to SEMH challenges. You’ll assist both inside and outside of the classroom, providing consistent academic and emotional support throughout the school day. The role requires a calm, resilient, and encouraging approach, as well as the ability to implement and reinforce positive behaviour strategies.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 or small group basis with emotional regulation, focus, and engagement
  • Assisting in the development of personalised learning and behaviour strategies
  • Encouraging positive interaction with peers and staff
  • Promoting independence and confidence in learning
  • Working collaboratively with the SENCO, teachers, and external professionals

Candidate Profile:

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has previous experience supporting children with SEMH needs in an educational setting
  • Holds a relevant degree or qualification in psychology, education, or a related field
  • Is patient, understanding, and adaptable to the needs of individual pupils
  • Has excellent interpersonal skills and is confident working across the primary curriculum
  • Can maintain firm but fair boundaries while promoting a nurturing learning environment
  • Is proactive, reliable, and passionate about making a difference

Job Details:

  • Role: SEMH Teaching Assistant
  • Location: London Borough of Lambeth
  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:00pm
  • Pay: £89 – £105 per day (paid weekly via PAYE – no umbrella fees or hidden deductions)
  • Contract Type: Full-time, long-term
