Ortus Recruitment is working in partnership with a welcoming mainstream primary school in Tooting that is seeking a skilled SEN Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated support for a Year 1 pupil with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This is a full-time, long-term opportunity ideal for someone experienced in supporting pupils who benefit from structured guidance, emotional regulation support, and consistent encouragement within the classroom.
The school is looking for a calm and confident individual who can build a strong, trusting relationship with the pupil while helping them engage positively with learning and daily school routines.
Role Details
- Position: SEMH Teaching Assistant (Year 1)
- Location: Tooting
- Start Date: Immediate start (candidates must have a maximum one-week notice period)
- Schedule: Monday – Friday, 08:30am – 4:00pm
- Contract: Full-time, long-term, term-time only
- Pay: £90 – £107 per day (PAYE – No Umbrella Payments/No Hidden Deductions)
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 support for a Year 1 pupil with SEMH needs
- Encourage positive behaviour and emotional regulation
- Assist the class teacher with adapted learning activities
- Help the pupil develop confidence, independence, and social skills
- Implement agreed behaviour strategies and support plans
- Promote a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment
- Share progress updates and observations with teaching staff
- Support participation in classroom learning and school routines
The Ideal Candidate
- Experience supporting children with SEMH or behavioural needs
- Knowledge of positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation techniques
- Patient, resilient, and able to remain calm under pressure
- Skilled at building rapport with young pupils
- Proactive and able to work collaboratively with teaching staff
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Committed to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing
