SEN Learning and Behaviour Support
Ortus Recruitment is delighted to present an exciting opportunity for an experienced Teaching Assistant to join our partnered school in Streatham, which provides tailored education for pupils with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, as well as a range of Special Educational Needs (SEN). The school is currently undergoing an exciting phase of expansion, and this role will be part of a growing team that is making a significant impact on the lives of children with additional educational needs.
About the School:
The school is committed to providing high-quality education and support for children who have been referred from mainstream schools due to a variety of needs, including behavioural challenges, low numeracy, literacy, speech and language difficulties, and SEMH. Recently relocated to a brand-new site, the school boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including modern classrooms, a sports arena, gym area, library, and an indoor therapeutic, split-level soft-play structure. Additionally, the newly opened sixth form hub is dedicated to SEMH learners.
The curriculum at the school is diverse and engaging, offering activities such as horse-riding, cookery, boxing, and swimming to ensure students’ educational experiences are both enriching and hands-on.
The Role:
As a Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with pupils in the primary phase, providing essential support for those with SEMH and SEN. You will work independently and confidently with small groups of pupils and lead intervention sessions focused on literacy, numeracy, and other core subjects. In addition, you may be asked to support in some sports sessions, so a willingness to participate in these activities is important.
This is a rewarding opportunity to contribute to a school where the belief is that every student can achieve their potential when given the right support and teaching. You will be an integral part of a team that strives for excellence and ensures that each child receives the best possible education and care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead small groups and deliver intervention sessions focused on literacy, numeracy, and core subjects.
- Adapt teaching and learning approaches to meet the individual needs of pupils.
- Support sports activities and contribute to the wider school curriculum.
- Help monitor and track pupil progress, ensuring they meet their learning goals.
- Foster an inclusive and engaging learning environment.
- Work independently and collaboratively with colleagues to support the educational and emotional development of students.
The Successful Candidate Will Have:
- Proven experience working with pupils with SEMH/SEN in a school or alternative provision setting.
- A passion for supporting pupils who require additional support in their education.
- The ability to differentiate learning according to each child’s individual needs.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage your time effectively.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work closely with colleagues and parents.
- Strong literacy and numeracy skills.
- Good behaviour management techniques and the ability to maintain a calm and supportive classroom environment.
- A good understanding of various interventions and their impact on children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
- Confidence to work independently and lead learning sessions.
