SEN Teaching Assistant (Year 4) – Specialist 1:1 Support

Our recruitment team is seeking a compassionate, calm and confident SEN Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated 1:1 support for a wonderful Year 4 pupil with complex needs. This role is ideal for someone with a gentle but firm approach, who can build trust, create emotional safety, and support consistent learning and regulation.
About the Role:
You will work closely with a neurodivergent child who is supported by the school’s SEN team. Bonding may take time, and the successful candidate will be someone who remains patient, warm and unphased as the relationship develops.
The pupil presents with speech and language needs as well as emotional regulation challenges. She responds well to singing, dancing, soft toys and interactive play such as throwing a ball. Gentle coaxing, positive reinforcement, and creative communication strategies will be essential parts of daily support.
What We’re Looking For:
The ideal SEN Learning Support Assistant will:
- Be patient, calm, warm and steady, with a gentle yet confident presence
- Stay unphased during moments of dysregulation, using co-regulation and partnership approaches
- Have experience supporting autistic pupils or those with similar profiles
- Feel confident facilitating both in-class and out-of-class adaptations
- Be skilled at using distraction, redirection and nurturing communication techniques
- Have experience working with speech & language strategies and following therapy programmes
- Be able to support non-verbal or alternative communication methods
- Build positive, trusting relationships over time
- Bring creativity – singing, movement, play – to engage the pupil positively
About the Child:
- Neurodivergent, with bonding that develops gradually
- May show challenging or avoidant behaviour when anxious or unsure
- Can become distressed if told “no”, so gentle approaches and strategic redirection are key
- Enjoys singing, cuddly toys, dancing, and ball games
- Works with the guidance of the SEN team and external specialists
