Children with speech and language difficulties have trouble making words or sentences flow smoothly, for example they may stutter when speaking. Furthermore they have difficulty sounding out specific words or sound correctly, therefore this could take a toll on their self-confidence.
If you are accepted for this role, you will be expected to work with a student one on one, supporting them academically and emotionally. Furthermore you should be able to transform language teaching, through conversations, songs, games and activities, which may engage the children more. You should be able to personalise teaching strategies to the student you are working with, which should help them pronounce and sound out words they are struggling with.
Skills required for this role :
- Creativity, to make learning personalised to the child you are working with
- Excellent listening skills, so you are aware of the children’s needs
- Ability to be sensitive and understanding
- Good communication skills, so you can build strong relationships with the children you are working with.
- Being able to be flexible and adapting to different situations each day.
- Passion for speech and language development
