Teaching Assistant
Ortus Recruitment is proud to be working in partnership with a specialist school in the London Borough of Wandsworth, seeking to appoint a highly motivated Teaching Assistant with a passion for supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs. you will work closely with the class teacher to support pupils in small classes, where children are not yet working at age-related expectations. All pupils have an EHCP, with many presenting with Autism and associated Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). Some pupils may display challenging behaviour. You will support learning on a whole-class, small-group, and one-to-one basis, following structured behaviour support plans and individual risk assessments. This is a fantastic long-term, full-time opportunity for an individual who is eager to make a meaningful impact on pupils’ learning, development, and wellbeing within a nurturing and ambitious school environment.
Key Responsibilities
Support for Pupils:
- Work with pupils individually or in small groups on targeted learning activities
- Support pupils in line with EHCPs, Behaviour Support Plans, and risk assessments
- Use basic Makaton signs and PECS to support communication
- Monitor and record pupils’ progress and behaviour accurately
- Ensure pupils’ personal equipment is maintained and up to date
Support for Teachers:
- Assist with lesson preparation, resources, and classroom organisation
- Supervise pupils during lessons, lunch, and playtimes
- Support the delivery of lessons and learning objectives
- Assist with displays, teaching materials, and administrative tasks
Support for the Curriculum & School:
- Use ICT and educational software to enhance learning
- Support curriculum-related activities such as Sports Day, swimming, and school events
- Assist in maintaining a safe, clean, and caring learning environment
- Support the implementation of school and government initiatives
The Ideal Candidate
- Experience working with SEN pupils (Autism/SLCN preferred)
- Calm, patient, and resilient when supporting challenging behaviour
- Willingness to learn or use Makaton and PECS
- A team player who values collaboration and professional development
- Committed to making a positive difference in pupils’ lives
