Ortus Recruitment is proud to be working in partnership with a welcoming and inclusive two-form entry primary school in Crystal Palace that is seeking a dedicated Autism Support Assistant to provide 1:1 support for a Year 5 pupil with Autism on a full-time, long-term basis. Following the approval of the pupil’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), the school has secured funding to appoint an experienced Learning Support Assistant who can provide consistent, tailored support and help the pupil thrive both academically and socially. The school has an excellent reputation for its inclusive approach to SEND and offers a supportive working environment, with an experienced SENCO and Senior Leadership Team committed to the professional development of all staff. The Role

As the Autism Support Assistant, you will:

• Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a Year 5 pupil with Autism.
• Build a structured, predictable, and nurturing learning environment.
• Support the pupil’s academic, social, and emotional development.
• Implement strategies outlined within the pupil’s EHCP.
• Work collaboratively with the class teacher, SENCO, and external professionals.
• Use the school’s excellent facilities and SEND resources to deliver engaging learning opportunities.
• Promote independence, confidence, and positive behaviour throughout the school day.

The Ideal Candidate

• Previous experience supporting children with Autism is essential.
• A patient, calm, and proactive approach to supporting pupils with additional needs.
• Experience managing challenging behaviours using positive behaviour strategies.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
• Able to commit to the role for the full academic year to provide consistency for the pupil.
• Passionate about helping children achieve their full potential.

Desirable Experience

• Previous experience working within a primary school.
• Knowledge of the Primary National Curriculum.
• Understanding of Speech and Language development.
• Experience using Makaton or PECS.
• Team Teach, MAPA, PRICE, or other positive handling training (desirable but not essential).
