Ortus Recruitment is currently partnering with an inclusive and forward-thinking school in Tooting that is seeking an experienced and motivated HLTA to join their dedicated support team for an immediate start/September 2026 start. This is a fantastic opportunity for a skilled HLTA who is passionate about supporting young people with Autism and SEMH needs, and additional learning barriers. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering targeted support and interventions that enable pupils to access learning, develop independence, and achieve positive educational outcomes. You will work closely with teaching staff, SEN professionals, and pastoral teams to provide high-quality support both within specialist provisions and mainstream classroom settings.
The Role
As a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, you will take a leading role in supporting pupils with additional needs through structured interventions, personalised learning programmes, and classroom support.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Delivering targeted academic, social, and emotional interventions on a 1:1 and small group basis
- Supporting pupils with Autism, SEMH needs, communication difficulties, and additional learning needs
- Working collaboratively with teachers to adapt learning activities and classroom strategies
- Leading small group teaching sessions and supporting pupils to achieve individual targets
- Monitoring, recording, and reporting on pupil progress and engagement
- Supporting the implementation of behaviour support plans and emotional regulation strategies
- Encouraging independence, resilience, and positive participation in learning
- Building positive relationships with pupils, families, and external professionals
- Assisting with the development of inclusive practices across the school
- Contributing to a safe, nurturing, and supportive learning environment
The Ideal Candidate
The school is seeking a confident and compassionate HLTA who can build strong relationships with pupils and provide effective support in a dynamic educational environment.
Applicants should ideally have:
- Previous experience working as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, Senior Teaching Assistant, or experienced SEN Teaching Assistant
- Strong knowledge of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
- Experience delivering interventions and supporting personalised learning programmes
- Excellent behaviour management and relationship-building skills
- The ability to lead small group teaching sessions independently
- Strong organisational, communication, and record-keeping skills
- A proactive and adaptable approach to supporting young people
- Experience working collaboratively with teaching staff and multidisciplinary teams
- A genuine commitment to inclusive education and pupil wellbeing
Desirable Experience:
- Experience supporting pupils with EHCPs
- Knowledge of sensory needs and communication strategies
- Previous experience within specialist provisions, alternative provisions, or inclusive mainstream settings
- Relevant HLTA status or equivalent educational support qualifications
