Early Years Teaching Assistant

Ortus Recruitment is currently partnering with a welcoming and highly supportive mainstream primary school in Mitcham that is seeking an enthusiastic Early Years Teaching Assistant to join their dedicated EYFS team immediately or for a September 2026 start. This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate Early Years practitioner who enjoys helping young children develop confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning during the most important stages of their education. The school is looking for someone who can contribute positively to a nurturing and stimulating environment where every child is encouraged to achieve their full potential. The successful candidate will work alongside experienced teachers and Early Years professionals to support children’s learning through a combination of structured activities, child-led exploration, and play-based learning. The role offers the chance to make a meaningful impact on children’s academic, social, and emotional development while gaining valuable experience within a well-established primary school setting.

The Role

As an Early Years Teaching Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting children throughout their Early Years journey and helping to create an engaging and inclusive learning environment.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting children within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum
  • Assisting with the delivery of engaging learning activities that promote development across all areas of learning
  • Supporting children’s communication, language, literacy, and numeracy development
  • Encouraging learning through play, exploration, and practical experiences
  • Assisting with phonics activities and early reading development
  • Supporting children with additional learning needs and ensuring all pupils can access learning opportunities
  • Observing and recording children’s progress and achievements
  • Helping to create stimulating classroom displays and learning environments
  • Building positive relationships with children, parents, carers, and colleagues
  • Supporting children’s social, emotional, and behavioural development
  • Ensuring safeguarding and welfare procedures are consistently followed

The Ideal Candidate

The school is seeking a caring, proactive, and dedicated individual who is passionate about Early Years education.

Applicants should ideally have:

  • A Level 3 Early Years, Childcare, or equivalent qualification
  • Previous experience working within an EYFS setting
  • A good understanding of child development and the Early Years Foundation Stage framework
  • Knowledge of phonics and early language development strategies
  • Experience supporting children with SEND or a strong understanding of inclusive practice
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills
  • Confidence using educational technology, including tablets and classroom-based ICT
  • The ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • A flexible, reliable, and positive approach to supporting children
  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent)
