SEN Learning Support Assistant

Are you an experienced SEN Learning Support Assistant with a passion for supporting children with Autism and SEMH needs? Do you have the patience, resilience, and emotional intelligence to make a lasting difference in a child’s life?

Ortus Recruitment is working in partnership with a welcoming and inclusive mainstream primary school in Roehampton that is seeking a dedicated SEN Learning Support Assistant to join their team from September 2026. This is a rewarding full-time opportunity supporting a Year 2 pupil with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The successful candidate will play a key role in helping the pupil access learning, regulate emotions, and build confidence within the classroom environment.

The Role

As an SEN Learning Support Assistant, you will provide dedicated 1:1 support throughout the school day, working closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and wider support team. You will help create a safe, positive, and nurturing environment that enables the pupil to thrive both academically and socially.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build a positive, trusting, and consistent relationship with the pupil.
  • Support emotional regulation and wellbeing throughout the school day.
  • Use calm, therapeutic, and child-centred approaches to support learning.
  • Recognise triggers and implement appropriate de-escalation strategies.
  • Adapt classroom activities to meet individual learning needs.
  • Encourage confidence, resilience, independence, and positive social interactions.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff, external professionals, and parents.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Has previous experience supporting children with ASD and SEMH needs.
  • Possesses a strong understanding of behaviour support and emotional regulation strategies.
  • Has experience working within a primary school or similar educational setting.
  • Is calm, patient, nurturing, and resilient.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Can remain positive, consistent, and proactive when faced with challenges.
  • Has a genuine passion for supporting vulnerable children and helping them achieve their potential.

Why Join This School?

  • Supportive and inclusive mainstream primary school environment.
  • Strong focus on pupil wellbeing and pastoral support.
  • Dedicated leadership team committed to staff development.
  • Well-established SEND provision and experienced support staff.
  • Collaborative and welcoming school community.
  • Well-resourced classrooms and learning environments.
  • Opportunity to make a meaningful and lasting impact on a child’s educational journey.

This role offers far more than classroom support, it is an opportunity to become a trusted adult for a child who benefits from consistency, encouragement, and positive relationships. It would suit an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Behaviour Mentor, Youth Worker, or graduate looking to develop a career within education and SEND.
