SEN Learning Support Assistant

Ortus Recruitment is working in partnership with a welcoming and inclusive mainstream primary school in Roehampton that is seeking a dedicated SEN Learning Support Assistant to join their team from September 2026. This is a rewarding full-time opportunity supporting a Year 2 pupil with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The successful candidate will play a key role in helping the pupil access learning, regulate emotions, and build confidence within the classroom environment.
The Role
As an SEN Learning Support Assistant, you will provide dedicated 1:1 support throughout the school day, working closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and wider support team. You will help create a safe, positive, and nurturing environment that enables the pupil to thrive both academically and socially.
Key Responsibilities
- Build a positive, trusting, and consistent relationship with the pupil.
- Support emotional regulation and wellbeing throughout the school day.
- Use calm, therapeutic, and child-centred approaches to support learning.
- Recognise triggers and implement appropriate de-escalation strategies.
- Adapt classroom activities to meet individual learning needs.
- Encourage confidence, resilience, independence, and positive social interactions.
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff, external professionals, and parents.
The Ideal Candidate
- Has previous experience supporting children with ASD and SEMH needs.
- Possesses a strong understanding of behaviour support and emotional regulation strategies.
- Has experience working within a primary school or similar educational setting.
- Is calm, patient, nurturing, and resilient.
- Demonstrates excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Can remain positive, consistent, and proactive when faced with challenges.
- Has a genuine passion for supporting vulnerable children and helping them achieve their potential.
