1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant

Ortus Recruitment is currently partnering with a welcoming and inclusive mainstream primary school in Tulse Hill that is seeking a dedicated 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant to join immediately or in September 2026. The successful candidate will work closely with individual pupils, providing tailored support to ensure they can access learning, build confidence, and make meaningful progress both academically and socially. The Role

As a 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant, you will provide targeted support for pupils with Special Educational Needs and additional learning barriers, helping them to engage positively with learning and school life.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing dedicated 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEND
  • Supporting children to access classroom learning and achieve individual targets
  • Assisting with the implementation of personalised learning strategies and interventions
  • Encouraging pupils’ independence, confidence, and social development
  • Supporting behaviour management and emotional regulation where required
  • Working collaboratively with class teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals
  • Monitoring pupil progress and maintaining accurate records where necessary
  • Assisting with first aid and pupil welfare when required
  • Promoting a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment

  • A degree-level qualification or equivalent experience
  • Previous experience supporting children or young people within an educational setting
  • A good understanding of Special Educational Needs and common barriers to learning
  • Knowledge of strategies used to support pupils with additional needs and challenging behaviours
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to build positive relationships with pupils, staff, and families
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage responsibilities effectively
  • An understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures
  • Awareness of the social and emotional challenges some children may face
  • A patient, adaptable, and nurturing approach to supporting learning
