Teaching Assistant
Ortus Recruitment is currently working in partnership with a highly supportive specialist school in Wandsworth that is seeking a compassionate and committed SEN Teaching Assistant to join their dedicated team. This rewarding opportunity is ideal for individuals who are passionate about supporting children and young people with additional needs, particularly pupils with Autism, Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), complex needs, and communication challenges. The successful candidate will work closely with teachers, therapists, and support staff to help pupils access learning, manage routines, and achieve positive outcomes both academically and socially. This role would suit experienced SEN Teaching Assistants, care/support workers, psychology graduates, or individuals looking to build a career within education, therapy, social care, or child development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supporting pupils with Autism, Severe Learning Difficulties, and additional complex needs on a 1:1 and small group basis
- Assisting teachers in delivering tailored learning activities that meet pupils’ individual needs and EHCP targets
- Promoting communication, emotional regulation, independence, and social interaction throughout the school day
- Supporting pupils with sensory needs and implementing behaviour support strategies where required
- Assisting with personal care routines when necessary, ensuring dignity and wellbeing are maintained at all times
- Helping to create a calm, engaging, and inclusive classroom environment
- Encouraging positive behaviour through patience, consistency, and relationship-building
- Working collaboratively with teaching staff, therapists, and parents to support pupil progress
- Contributing positively to the wider school community and daily school life
The Ideal Candidate Will:
- Have previous experience working with children or young people with SEN, Autism, behavioural needs, or learning difficulties
- Demonstrate a calm, empathetic, and patient approach when supporting pupils
- Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Be organised, proactive, and able to use initiative effectively
- Have a genuine passion for inclusive education and supporting vulnerable learners
- Be comfortable supporting pupils with personal care where required
- Understand the importance of safeguarding and promoting pupil welfare
- Work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Show resilience and a positive attitude within a specialist education setting
Desirable Skills & Experience:
- Experience within a specialist school, SEN provision, care setting, or mainstream school with SEN pupils
- Knowledge of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), sensory processing needs, or behaviour management strategies
- Experience supporting pupils with EHCPs or delivering targeted interventions
- Relevant qualifications such as NVQ, Childcare Qualification, Psychology Degree, or SEN-related training
- First Aid training or willingness to undertake further professional development
